In the past, it often seemed that pollution was a problem that could be solved with a single command or by simply installing a device that would emit a single, clear message. But, as science has been revealing, that isn’t true. We need to consider the sources of our pollution, and to do that, we need to change the way we think about and behave.
A long time ago, in the good old days when we used to think about pollution in terms of the polluter, we saw that we had to focus on the source of pollution. We saw that we had to focus on the source of pollution and how it affected all of us. But as we’ve learned, it is much more than just a person. The source of pollution, the real source, is all of us.
So where do we think about pollution? We think about it at a macro level. How many billions of tons of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases are pumped into the atmosphere every year. We think about it at a micro level. How many of those tons are produced by businesses and industries that use diesel or coal, and how many of those tons are pumped into our atmosphere.
In this short post we’ve made a number of mistakes. First, we’ve used the word “macro” to mean “at a small scale,” (which is technically correct) but we should have been more precise. We should have been using the term “micro” to mean “at a large scale,” (which is incorrect).
Macro is a little bit vague. Micro is a little bit more precise.
Macro is the concept of a general rule that can be applied to a large number of things and can explain the results that we see at a macro level. Micro is the practice of using a very specific rule to explain a very small number of specific results.

Macro (and Micro) is the philosophy that the things we focus on and the actions we take to achieve the desired results are small enough to be a part of our everyday life. I don’t think it’s entirely wrong, but there are times when small changes can make a big difference.
